With great sadness, I declare the GDPD officially closed. Like so many ex-pats, my time in Dubai has finally come to an end. I’m saddened to say this site never took off as we had hoped. Between work and other commitments, the we were all just too busy to keep up.
I’m now back in my hometown of Washington, DC, so you might just see something pop up over there.

So after an proper drinking brunch ending at 4, skipping dinner then a swanky lounge until well past midnight, there was clearly no choice but to get a late night shawarma. A short drive to Satwa and a bit of luck with parking later, we were seating ourselves outside at the lively Al Mallah restaurant. Seconds later the waiter promptly yelled at us and told us to move to another table.

I found Bahri Bar by chance. It was during my first year in Dubai and I was just discovering Madinat Jumeirah with friends. After having explored the souqs, we were looking for a nice place to stay and relax. We found it hidden in the Mina A Salam Hotel.

For the Great Dubai Plate Debate’s inaugural dinner, I wanted to try something new and interesting, so I asked my friend, Nirmal, for a recommendation. Nirmal grew up in Bur Dubai, and is my go-to guy when it comes to anything about the old parts of the city. He began rattling off a bunch of recommendations, but when he mentioned a Goan-style place with great seafood, I was sold.
